Free Crochet Pattern | Quick and Simple Chevron Hats | Preemie Through Child Sizing

October 16, 2015 by pinssneedles

chevron hat size preemie child free crochet pattern

These quick and simple to crochet chevron hats are my favorite for donating! Scrap yarn makes great stripes, or choose a trendy gray-and-white color scheme. It is easy to make them for special events and themes by just changing up the colors.

A pom pom would be a perfect addition, but check with the organization you are donating to first!

Questions have been asked about Round 3 working out to become 40 stitches… A 2-dc group is worked in between each dc of Round 2. The V-stitch pattern has not been formed yet, so do not skip 2 dc as for the pattern. I hope this description is more helpful!

I made this for my granddaughter and now my daughter wants a matching hat. Do you have the instructions for an adult size?

      I don’t know why I can’t figure this out.
Maybe over thinking it, but I just cannot get it. I see no where it’s going to make a chevron pattern.
I’m ready to give up too. I tried for 5 hours last night.

What do MC and CC stand for, out of curiosity? I ended up having to diagram the preemie patterns, but I’ve got them working for me! Thanks for the pattern!

MC= Main Color and CC= Contrasting Color. I forgot to mention it!

I think MC stands for Main color and CC stands for Contrasting Color.

Hi there, total beginner here. The thing that is throwing me is the slip stitch between the first and second dc. Does that mean your effectively skip the first dc each time? Thanks in advance!

    • pinssneedles says

      March 27, 2016 at 1:16 pm

Yes, you skip the first dc each round for the “V” effect.

Trying to make the 3-5 lb preemie hat, and round 3 just does not work.
I followed it twice, exactly as written, and end up with 26 stitches instead of 30. I even looked at the instructions for 2-3 lb preemie to see if there was maybe a typo, and they are written the exact same.
Can you clarify that round in any way? Or double check to make sure you wrote it out the way you meant to?

      Never mind!
I got frustrated and put it down for a few minutes, and then when unpicked it up and read it again it turns out I was reading too fast and missed some details 🙂
      All better now!

I was browsing Ravelry and came upon your free ADORABLE pattern. I am a NICU nurse, and have been making my “signature” hat for a long time. I was looking for something new for my preemies/newborns. LOVE your pattern. Quick. Easy. Great instructions-no problem understanding. The parents love the hats, and they keep the tiny babies heads warm when out of the isolette.

For the child size, the end says to repeat round 7 twelve more times. The pattern only goes to round 6. I assumed it was supposed to be repeat round 6, but I wanted to make sure. Anyone else make this size and notice this?

    Thank you in advance!

I’ve made the child size and the toddler size so far, luv’n this pattern thanks for sharing. It’s an easy pattern to follow, but it’s one you definitely have to count your stitches or you don’t get the correct increase for the sizing. I’ve had to frog now an then to get the correct stitches required but as long as I take my time and really focus on it it does work up on the easy side. An i luv the repeat of the stitches to work the last rows in they work up easy and fast. It’s a nice afternoon project that works up in 1-2 hours depending on how fast or slow I work up the pattern. My kids luv the design and have requested some in specific colors 🙂 now I just need to figure out how to make one for an adult so I can make me some too lol

I’m having trouble following the pattern as I find it not adding up properly. Are you able to post a video tutorial? Then I can figure out where I’m going wrong. It’s such a cute pattern I would love to recreate it.

Can you advise how you will add stitches to make a tween/teen size?

  19. Sarah says

    December 26, 2020 at 3:22 am

Making Toddler size. Every time I do row 4 for the Toddler pattern I do not get a stitch count of 48.

The closest i ever reached was 58 and then I still had some trouble reaching the end quite a few times. The repeat in parenthesis confuses me as there is already a repeat *asterisk inside the ().

So either I am counting the double crochet leg that holds the previous 2 stitches made when I skip 1 or 2 dc or I’m not counting that leg but I don’t which is correct.
