The Owl – The Mitten by Jan Brett Character Ball Set | Free Crochet Pattern
Next to find the mitten is the owl. Today I’m sharing the pattern for the mole in my character ball series.
For the next month, I will be sharing a character ball set to tell the story of The Mitten. The animals all fit snugly in the mitten and will really fly when the mitten is flipped inside out.
Week by week I will share another character and will link them all up when finished. So far I have already shared the pattern for the big mitten. You can get started there and fill the mittens week by week with the character balls.

- Gauge: Approx 5 dc = 1″
- Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
- Brava sport weight acrylic yarn
- Camel heather
- Umber heather
- Yellow safety eyes, 12 mm
With canary yarn, Ch 10.
Dc 6 in 4th ch from hook. Sk 2 ch, sl st in next ch. 12 dc in last ch. Do not turn: Work in unworked loops of foundation chain. Sl st in same ch as first sl st. 6 dc in last ch. Sl st to top of first dc. Tie off, leaving long tail for sewing.
With black, work 5 dc cluster centered over the slip stitch of eyes and using the two stitches on either side of the slip stitch. Tie off, weave in ends.
With camel heather, work 6 sc into magic ring. Mark last stitch of round throughout.
Round 1: 2 sc in each sc around (12)
Round 2: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc* around. (18)
Round 3: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc* around. (24)
Round 4: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc* around. (30)
Rounds 5-7: 1 sc in each sc around.
Do not tie off, take a break to work the face:
Sew eyes to the front of the head. Do not sew down the beak, instead, fold it outwards so it sticks out.
Attach yellow safety eyes to center of the dc circles as shown in the picture.
Continue the head:
Round 8: *Sc 3, dec* around. (24)
Round 9: *Sc 2, dec* around (18)
Round 10: *Sc 1, dec* around (12)
Round 11: Dec around. Tie off leaving long tail. Sew opening shut. Weave in ends.
The “ears” are double-crochet scallops that by design fold in half to create the ear shape. They take a little experimenting to get placed quite right so don’t get discouraged.
For left ear, with umber heather, sl st around round 5. Work 7 dc around the same stitch of round 6 to make a half-circle. Sl st around round 7. See pictures for details.
For right ear, work the same except start around round 7 and end around round 5.
Stay tuned next week for the badger to join the mitten!
